9/20 Vintage Drop: Granola Aesthetic

Over the weekend I was in Charlotte, NC and got to spend some time with my dad. We talked about fall plans, camping trips we’d like to take, trundled around my sister’s garden, pointed and judged the neighbor’s trees. Recently there’s been some health related issues in the family, and it’s driven home the realization to me that we are all getting older. With that, I’ve spent alot of time thinking about my childhood in the sticks of Michigan, and how my dad has, in a way, always been a style icon to me.

Flannels, chunky sweaters that we teased him for, Levi’s that had seen one too many oil changes, the Carhartt he’d wear to chop wood for the stove in the dead of winter. He tells us the story often of the time he worked at UPS, and how he got so used to how hot the back of the truck was that he wore flannels when off the clock for an entire summer. If my dad was in his 20’s now, he’d be Mr. Granola.

Up until last week, for whatever reason, I’ve always found this aesthetic the easiest to do style bundles for, but the most difficult for myself to personally relate to. I don’t go on hikes through canyons, backpacking through trails in Washington, or rockclimb. I was raised as a lake girl, but now prefer the beach, and I miss camping but never plan trips. Granola felt very out of reach and very not me. It was thinking about my childhood that made me realize Granola can be in your backyard, your driveway, running errands, going for walks in your neighborhood, making bread in the kitchen. Granola can be here in the everyday, not just out somewhere on the Appalachian trail.
